In 1972...First to develop an API rated 100% synthetic motor oil. AMSOIL revolutionized the industry with the first synthetic motor oil in the world to pass API standards for passenger vehicles. The synthetic formula offered unprecedented benefits of wear protection and performance. Since then, other manufacturers have followed AMSOIL's lead and developed synthetic motor oils of their own. AMSOIL was and still is "The First in Synthetics"®.
In 1972...First to introduce the concept of "extended drain intervals" with a recommended 25,000 mile/12-month drain interval.
In 1973...First to manufacture a 100:1 premix synthetic 2-cycle oil. AMSOIL introduced the first synthetic 100-1 2-cycle oil. AMSOIL Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil shattered the industry's standards with its economical mix ratio. The leaner mix ratio meant reduced emissions, and the superior formula set higher expectations on the industry for wear protection, power and resistance to deposit formation. The introduction of AMSOIL Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil meant 2 cycle engines could last longer and work harder.
In 1974...First to manufacture synthetic gear lube for automotive use. AMSOIL introduced the world's first synthetic gear lube for general automotive use. It forever altered the industry's expectations of how gear lubes could perform in extreme temps. It also made dramatically extended drain intervals possible.
In 1976...AMSOIL formulated a multipurpose grease with a new synthetic base. The synthetic grease was a breakthrough for AMSOIL and for the industry, as it exhibited previously unattainable lubricity, unexcelled moisture resistance, and outstanding antiwear and extreme pressure characteristics.
In 1979...First to produce synthetic motor oils for diesel engines and marine engines. AMSOIL introduced the first synthetic multigrade diesel oil. AMSOIL synthetic diesel oil revolutionized the diesel community with its extended drain capability and uncompromising engine protection. Its capabilities are unmatched even today, over twenty years later.
In 1980...First to manufacture a synthetic automatic transmission fluid for automotive use. AMSOIL introduced the world's first synthetic automatic transmission fluid for general automotive use. The benefits of a synthetic - easier cold weather shifting, increased power and efficiency, and maximum high temperature protection - set all new standards for lubrication protection.
In 1982...AMSOIL developed an oil filter that set new standards for motor oil filtration. By removing virtually all wear-causing contaminants, the AMSOIL By-Pass Oil Filter helps engines last longer and require fewer repairs over their service life.
In 1985...AMSOIL revolutionized vehicle maintenance by greatly extending oil drain intervals. Passenger vehicles under the TRIGARD Program (using AMSOIL 100% Synthetic Motor Oil, an AMSOIL Foam Air Filter, an AMSOIL By-Pass Oil Filtration System and TRIGARD Oil Analysis) may never again need to have their motor oil changed. Instead, oil samples are analyzed to determine continued serviceability. This saves time, energy and prevents the introduction of needless waste oil in our environment.
In 1985...First U.S. company to utilize the NOACK volatility test as a standard of performance excellence. AMSOIL became the first American company to subject its motor oil to the demanding Noack Volatility Test - the ultimate measure of protection against volatile evaporation, or "burn-off". Though the company was founded in 1972, the story of AMSOIL INC. begins in the mid 1960's, when Lt. Col. A.J. "Al" Amatuzio, a jet fighter squadron commander, was impressed by the superb performance of synthetic lubricants in jet engines (only synthetics can be used in jet engines) and began considering their possible automotive applications. In 1972, after an intense period of research and development, Al Amatuzio introduced the first synthetic motor oil in the world to exceed API automotive service requirements.
The next year, Amatuzio developed a marketing plan to get his innovative but still unknown product to customers. His marketing plan allowed customers personal contact with a dealer who could take the time to explain and answer questions, and it distributed the product efficiently and economically. The rest is history! From humble beginnings in a northwest Wisconsin warehouse, AMSOIL pioneered an entire industry --synthetic lubrication-- and established high professional standards and ethical standards for a unique business opportunity.
